The Standard That Changed Everything

Cal/OSHA 3395 was the first comprehensive heat standard in the nation. It applies to all outdoor places of employment in California.

The 4 Core Pillars

1. Provision of Water

Water must be "fresh, pure, and suitably cool" and provided free of charge.

2. Access to Shade

Shade is mandatory at 80°F. Employees must be allowed to rest in the shade for at least 5 minutes when they feel the need to do so to prevent overheating.

3. High Heat Procedures

Strict requirements kick in at 95°F, including pre-shift meetings and direct observation.

4. Training

Training is non-negotiable for both crews and supervisors.
